ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani has been invited to visit Iraq at an undetermined date, Syria's state media reported on Friday.

He was issued an official invitation to visit Iraq for discussions about shared interests and to enter a new stage of relations between the neighboring countries, SANA reported.

Iraq was a supporter of Syria's toppled president Bashar al-Assad, but authorities in Baghdad have said that they want to maintain good ties with their neighbor.

Unconfirmed reports said Shaibani would arrive in Baghdad on Saturday to attend a conference. However, SANA said the date will be set at a later time.

Shaibani and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein spoke on the phone in December.
