Erbil hosts Deadpool 2’s Middle East premiere

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Empire Cinemas in Erbil’s Family Mall hosted the Middle East premiere of the follow up to the global hit Deadpool on Tuesday night.

Deadpool 2 stars Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Josh Brolin as Cable, the main antagonist.

The movie had earlier premiered in London and the US. The Kurdistan premiere was sponsored by Rudaw Media Network.

"I enjoyed it a lot. It premiered for the first time in Kurdistan,” Ayad Uzer, an English Studies student, told Rudaw.

"Yeah sure because if it is specified for Kurdistan and if it has premiered internationally, absolutely that is important,” Uzer said of what it means to host the regional premiere in Erbil.

"That is absolutely crucial for Kurdistan because this is the first time that Kurdistan has held this [premiere] because they think that Kurdistan is a tourist country,” Uzer posited.

"Because Kurdistan is what they call the second Dubai and it is known throughout the world. It is really important, of course,” Ilya, from Malaysia, told Rudaw.

She enjoyed the movie, but was worried about the violence depicted on screen.

The movie is rated R because of graphic and sexual content.

Some viewers, who had brought their kids, left the theatre early.
