Six storage depots containing household appliances catch fire in Erbil

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least six storage depots containing household appliances and tissue papers went up in flames in northern Erbil on Wednesday afternoon.

The blaze was being fed by flammable goods inside the building and has not yet been brought under control.

The burning storages are located on the main Erbil-Kirkuk road, near the sub-district of Qushtapa.

An eyewitness on the scene told Rudaw's Horvan Rafaat that five firefighting teams had been dispatched to extinguish the blaze.

The blaze has not resulted in any human losses but caused huge material damage.

There have been at least 186 fires in the last two months, Karwan Mirawdali, spokesperson for the Erbil civil defense directorate told Rudaw earlier this month.

There have been several major fires in Erbil recently.

A large fire engulfed Langa bazaar late last month, allegedly caused by an electric short circuit. This was not the first time that a fire had broken out in the market. There have been similar incidents in the past that have burned hundreds of shops, causing large amounts of financial damage.

At least three people, including two children, were injured when their house caught fire in Erbil’s Soran district in early March, in an incident attributed to a gas leak.
