Houses damaged, rivers overflow from rain in Erbil district
SORAN, Kurdistan Region - Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has overflowed the rivers in Erbil province’s Soran district and damaged over 20 houses in the area.
There has been an estimated 458 millimeters of rainfall in the district.
“The concrete fences of our gardens have all collapsed, and water flooded into our houses,” Ibrahim Khan Abdulla, a resident, told Rudaw on Sunday.
“Our main problem is being flooded with mud, limestone, and rocks, in some areas it has snowed, in some areas the water level has risen, and in some other areas the mud has dripped down as well, and our teams are everywhere cleaning the roads in more than ten places,” Khusrat Sadiq, Director of Soran road maintenance and destruction, said.
The government formed a committee to identify the shortcomings that caused the damage and try to compensate the residents.
“Water flooded in some houses, few sheep and cattle died, and some animal breeding halls collapsed,” Rajab Zuber, the mayor of Soran, told Rudaw.
Zuber added, “We will estimate the damages and try to compensate the victims.”
The Kurdistan Region experienced a wave of deadly and destructive floods in late 2021 and early 2022, with the capital Erbil bearing the brunt of the heavy rainstorms. At least 826 families were affected by the floods, which killed twelve people, including a ten-month-old baby.
The Ministry of Municipality and Tourism at the time assessed the cost of damages caused by the second flood as more than 21 billion dinars (over $14 million).
