Iraqi, Kurdish motorcyclists compete in Sulaimani drag race
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A motorcycle drag race was hosted at Sulaimani’s Arbat Airport on Friday. The competition featured various motorcycles, including dirt bikes and sports bikes.
“It's my first time participating in a championship of this kind. Previous ones weren't good, but this time it's very good. I came from Baghdad along with 12 other people, and others are coming from every province,” said Hassan Matari, one of the motorcyclists who came from Baghdad.
The competition was held in coordination with the Iraqi Motor and Automobile Racing Union and the Kurdistan Sports Center.
Motorsports can be a very expensive hobby, not only for purchasing the vehicle but also for maintenance and upgrades.
“Maximum expenses reach up to $23,000 to $23,500 for the cost of upgrading the bike, and the bike itself costs $17,500 for a total of $40,000 for a bike,” Khalid Omar, head of the Iraqi Automobile and Motorcycle Union-Erbil branch told Rudaw. “There are even more expensive ones, but let's not exaggerate,” he added.
Many people are interested in motorsports in the Kurdistan Region. However, the Region lacks sufficient places for them to compete and take part in events legally and safely.
