Erbil family says robbed by gunmen in military uniform

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An Erbil family said unidentified gunmen in military uniforms stormed their house at dawn on Thursday and committed robbery.

Zeyad Hassan, 46, the homeowner, said the gunmen identified themselves as security forces and claimed they were searching for drugs after receiving a tip. They tied up the family, including children, and stole cash, mobile phones, and personal documents.

"They stole $20,000 and 10,000,000 dinars. They broke my children's piggy bank. They took money from the wallets of my children. They took everything. They harmed the children. They pointed their weapons at them. They asked the children about where our jewelry and money were. The children were shocked. They’ve been in a terrible state ever since," Jwan Anwar, Hassan’s wife, told Rudaw.

The Asayesh and police have not publicly commented on the case. No arrests have been made yet.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has struggled to bring gun ownership under control. Firearms can be purchased on the black market.
