Kurdish leaders congratulate Starmer’s UK election victory

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday congratulated Keir Starmer on his election as the United Kingdom’s new prime minister.

“I congratulate Sir @Keir_Starmer on becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. I look forward to enduring partnership with the people and leadership of the UK,” President Barzani said in a post on X.

Labour leader Starmer has become the party’s first prime minister since 2010, following a landslide victory.
 
“I look forward to working with you to continue the strong KRI-UK partnership,” Masrour Barzani said in a post on X.

In Thursday’s election, the Labour party scored a massive win, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Labour won 412 seats in the House of Commons, a 210-seat increase from the 2019 vote, while Conservatives won 121 seats.

A Labour party member of Kurdish origin, Feryal Clark, won a seat. Her parents are originally from the city of Malatya in southeastern Turkey. Clark will represent London’s Enfield North constituency. She garnered 49.1 percent of the total votes in her constituency, besting the Conservative candidate Chris Dey, who won 19.8 percent.
