Sulaimani car explosion injures two

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least two people were injured when a car exploded in Sulaimani city on Tuesday, security sources said, adding that the cause of the blast remains unknown.

“A white Kia Sportage vehicle exploded today noon at 11:30 am, injuring two people. The cause of the explosion is unknown. One was the driver of the car and the other was a passenger,” Sulaimani-based security forces (Asayish) said in a statement.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, which took place near the Miran City residential complex in Sulaimani’s Raparin neighborhood.

Tavgari Azadi, a party linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) active in the Kurdistan Region, denied any involvement in the bombing and said that its members were not on board the vehicle.

“None of our members were in the car that blew up, and we deny any rumors about it,” Tara Hussein, co-chair of Tavgari Azadi, told Rudaw.

Sarkawt Ahmed, spokesperson for Sulaimani police, told Rudaw that the vehicle caught fire and its gasoline tank exploded.

In April, the vehicle of a former politburo member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) exploded in Sulaimani’s Sarchnar neighborhood, causing no casualties.
